Retracing D.H. Lawrence’s travels across Sicily and Sardinia 100 years on
When, in the winter of 1921, D.H. Lawrence decided to embark on a voyage of discovery to Sardinia, he certainly would not have imagined the cultural significance of the adventurevrecounted in black and white in Sea and Sardinia. Despite the brevity of the journey - which lasted only nine days - the English writer distilled an essence of the island and its people that is still recognisable today. Extracts from the story were originally serialised in the American magazine «The Dial» in October and November 1921, while the book was published in New York shortly afterwards, on 12th December, by Thomas Seltzer. The story is characterised by an intriguing psychological description of the characters that Lawrence and his wife Frieda encountered during the journey that led them from Sicily to Sardinia. The entire book is pervaded by realistic-naturalistic descriptions of the experience of travelling: the journey as a possibility in the making, the thoughts that emanate from it, and what unfolds, for better or worse.
“I am always surprised by how my work facilitates dialogue between me and the photographed subjects even after the photo shoot. Perhaps it is precisely listening to individual life stories that keeps the passion for what I do for a living alive.”

“Moving. Growing apart. Catharsis. These three actions have defined my way of living since I was a very young boy. My family is originally from Sardinia, but I grew up between Sicily and mainland Italy. As a ‘son of emigration’ - as I ironically define myself most of the time - the sense of return has marked my life very deeply, coexisting with the opposite desire to be elsewhere from where I was at that precise moment. I consider myself a sort of stateless person, having lived in totally different places: moving from Sicily to the Po Valley, from Tyrol to Venice, from Lisbon to Florence, from Madrid to Bologna, I am stilly on the go and based in the East Midlands, where D.H. Lawrence was born one morning on 11th September of 1885.” Daniele Marzeddu
